Too often, the interview conversation focuses on the interviewee. Today’s Monday Minute centers on the interviewer. There is an art to being an interviewer. I have interviewed hundreds of candidates, from interns to experienced professionals. Here are three tips I want to share.
📌Clarify the question
Some questions take work for candidates to understand. I often help candidates by giving an example or asking if they would like me to rephrase the question.
Some jargon is not expected of the candidate, so don’t assume they know the acronyms, organizational structure, or your company’s lingo.
📌Choose kindness
It’s already a nervous environment for the candidate. I try to ensure I am constantly smiling or asking them if they need a moment to gather their thoughts before answering.
📌Collaborate with others
I like having multiple functions interview candidates because they bring different perspectives. This diversity of the interview team includes peers.
What are some tips that you gained from interviewing? Were any of the three mentioned new to you?
