Our youngest son had a soccer tournament over the weekend that required us to travel away from home. I watched how the players performed on the field but, more importantly, off the field. How do they get along? How do they include others?
Because of this team sport, our sons are learning the value of teamwork at an early age.
Playing your position is one thing; supporting your teammates is another.
These boys spent every possible moment together on and off the field. They learned more about each other’s personalities, likes, and dislikes.
After every tournament, I notice the boys communicate better on the field. They celebrate the wins together and collectively comfort the losses.
We need to learn the value of teamwork, and it’s never too early or too late.
How well do you communicate with your team? Do you practice your skills and contribute your part to the greater good of the team?
Do you take time to get to know your teammates? Sometimes, we spend more waking hours with our coworkers than anyone else. Do you know them?
Here are three skills that are strengthened by teamwork (taken from my fifteen-year-old son to see if my theory is correct):
1. Communication
2. Accountability
3. Empathy
What skills do you need to strengthen as a team player?
