Moore Of You

MONDAY MINUTE: Its More Mental than Physical

There has been a lot of attention on mental health of athletes in the recent news. This has sparked an interesting debate and a topic that I can definitely relate to especially when comparing it to showing up to work as your full self. There are may facets to me that I often have to switch depending on the environment. I am a wife, mom, professional, a Black female Leader, Engineer and so much more. I can’t possibly push on all cylinders all the time.

Too often, we are told to push through and persevere regardless of how we feel. In many cases that is true, but we have to be realistic and honest with ourselves when we know we need to take a break, remove ourselves of situations and basically allow ourselves to heal and repair mentally. Let’s be clear, not all mental health issues require medication but simply a break from the hustle of everyday work life. We have to rid ourselves of the stigma that all mental health requires medication, doctor care or hospitalization. Think of mental health as you do physical health. Some physical health can be done with simple diet changes or exercise and others require doctor intervention.  The same can be said for mental health.

I heard a great analogy by Actively Black (@activelyblack) during a recent Instagram post.

“Mental controls everything that your body does. In the same way that the keyboard on your computer is needed, but if the software inside the computer doesn’t work, it doesn’t matter if the keyboard, screen and mouse are perfectly fine. The computer won’t work properly if the software (mental health) is not working properly. “

What are some ways you can develop mental breaks for yourself? How do you determine when to push through or you just need a break? Need help determining the course of action for you? Feel free to connect with Moore Of You at info@mooreofyou.com.
