Moore Of You

As we start the second half of Black History Month and observe Presidents’ Day, I am focusing on reflecting on how my actions today leave a legacy for the future.

Do you ever think about the history makers and if they were thinking about the moment they were attempting to make change and the impact it would have on future generations?

That’s a major portion of Black History Month. Trailblazers who were determined to make a difference and create a better future.

Amanda Gorman said it perfectly, “You really have to crown yourself with the belief that what I’m about and what I’m here for is way beyond this moment. I’m learning that I am not lightning that strikes once. I am the hurricane that comes every single year, and you can expect to see me again soon.”

Today, many of us feel that our moment is too small, our efforts will go unnoticed. I disagree. The small moments combined make larger change…whether it’s tutoring a child in math or being a role model for your nieces and nephews or younger siblings. We don’t put enough weight in our contribution and we should. People are watching us and being inspired by even the little things we do and say.

So ask yourself these questions:

Are you mentoring someone? Are you being mentored?

Are you helping someone identify what they want to be in their career and encouraging them by making network connections?

Whether you are 1 month or 500 months into your career, there is always someone behind you that needs support and encouragement that you can provide. There may be a coworker that just needs to know how much you appreciate their presence on the team or help on an assignment. Why not tell them?
