Today’s Monday Minute highlights some ordinary items that you probably didn’t know were invented by a Black person.
Consider this your Black History lesson for the day. If you know some, then this is your friendly reminder.
- Clothes Dryer George T. Sampson. June 6, 1892)
- Door Knob (O. Dorsey. Dec 12, 1878)
- Elevator (Alexander Miles. Oct 11, 1867)
- Fire Extinguisher (TJ Marshall. Oct 26, 1872)
- Hair Brush (Lydia Newman. Nov 15 1898)

Imagine going throughout a typical day without those items. Isn’t it amazing how Black people have contributed to the success of everyday tasks? Some of these inventions were only a few years after the abolishment of slavery with the 13th amendment in 1865. There are SO many more, but I kept it to twelve. Just do a simple Google search and you can find many more!
Let’s remember the contribution, be inspired and encouraged to continue to strive for excellence.
