I recently saw a Facebook post asking people which college course caused them to question their degree or question staying in school. It was a humorous post but definitely made me reflect.
There were some classes where I really struggled and questioned if Engineering was the field for me. There were others where I wondered if they’d have value in real life. Then there were those that I really enjoyed and in fact, use to this day. Believe it or not, I still dabble in AutoCAD from time to time. I enjoy making layouts and process flows.
One thing is consistent, I didn’t quit. That one class I struggled in didn’t cause me to overlook my capabilities or lose focus. I knew Engineering was right for me. I knew I had the intellect, but I had to push myself to stay focused. I leveraged classmates and project teams to encourage me and balance our collective skillsets to achieve my academic goals.
It’s ironic that those same tactics hold true in my professional career. There were some assignments, some days and if I’m honest, some roles that at times, caused me to question if this was for me. But like college, I didn’t let that one assignment dictate my entire career. I’ve continued to stay focused, persevere and leverage my resources to get the best out of my career and achieve my career goals.
So, is there one class that caused you to question your degree? Or one role that caused you to question your career?
