Moore Of You

On Friday, my husband and I celebrated 16 years of marriage…our “sweet 16”. I often get asked how we make our marriage work given our continuously growing careers. We are successful in our respective fields with Harold most recently becoming the Chief Information Security Officer for Lifeway Christian Resources while I am the Director of Quality and Continuous Improvement for Cognex Corporation and Founder of Moore of You, LLC. It’s definitely a partnership. We’ve supported each another in the phases of our educational and professional careers over the years. There are definitely sacrifices coupled with gives and takes that overall have shown to not only progress our careers, but more importantly our marriage.
Our ways are not for everyone, but definitely have worked for us.
Here are just two keys that have helped make our marriage AND careers be successful:
We are partners and friends
We keep this in perspective. We are not competing against each other. Our careers are a means to build a legacy for our family and community.
It helps that we are both in technical fields, so we can bounce ideas off each other, talk “shop” and even challenge one another to pursue opportunities.
The First Come, First Serve Rule
We both started traveling for work early in our careers. Once we had our first son, we created a “first come, first serve” rule on booking travel dates to ensure at least one of us were home. Harold tapered his travel to support me while I was pursuing my MBA and later in our marriage I extended the same support while he obtained his master’s degree. There are other occasions where we have done this for each other including pursuing positions that require relocating.
