Moore Of You

Do you listen with the intent of understanding or do you listen in anticipation of responding?

I find myself doing both. It’s something we all need to work on ensuring we listen to understand rather than anticipating our own response. While thinking of how we respond, we tune out what the other person is saying. Imagine you being the one talking, would you want the other person not actively listening to what you are saying?

Are you a person who wants to have a quick response? Do you believe it makes you seem prepared or smart?

I suggest you get comfortable with silence. Allow yourself to process what was said and then provide a thoughtful response. This takes practice, but is a great skill to master.

Why is active listening important? It allows you to build trust and demonstrates concern and interest in what others are saying. It also allows you to learn from others.

There are many books and resources available for active listening.  I listed 3 of my favorite of 10 steps for active listening according to a Forbes article in this week’s Monday Minute graphic.
