Moore Of You

March is Women’s History Month and this past week, there was a specific day, Wednesday, March 8 that marked International Women’s Day. It’s an annual celebration to commemorate cultural, political, and socioeconomic achievements of women. It is also a focal point in the women’s rights movement, bringing attention to issues such as gender equality, reproductive rights and violence against women. For 2021, The International Women’s Day website chose the hashtag, #ChooseToChallenge. The challenge causes you to reflect and answer the question, “How will I help forge a gender equal world?”
Although the day has past, the intent remains. So I employ you to really consider how you forge a gender equal world. Do you embark on courageous conversations by calling out gendered actions or assumptions? Do you consciously choose to engage with people regardless of gender?…I know that’s a loaded question, but a valid one. Don’t short change someone because they are female or think they are weaker. Allow the individual to express their strength, aptitude, etc.
I recently had a conversation with a lady that told me she was passed up for a promotion some years ago because, in the words of her manager, “she just had a baby and should focus on being a mom.” Understandably, she sought out HR and legal ramifications for his opinion; however imagine how many times decisions are made like this without even being discussed or outwardly expressing these thoughts.
It’s this type of behavior that needs to change. It’s these types of thoughts that hold well deserving women from pursuing life goals.
So I ask you to choose the challenge. How will you forge a gender equal world? How do you level the playing field?
