The purpose of National Engineers Week is to call attention to the contributions to society that engineers make. It is also a time for engineers to emphasize the importance of learning math, science, and technical skills.
How fitting that Friday, February 19th, I attended my first North Carolina State Engineering Foundation Board meeting? I am elated to be appointed and serve on this board in this capacity. An ability to give back to the university that accredited my engineering skills. Our meeting oriented me on the different committees and how I may best utilize my skills and experiences to enhance the experience of existing students, facility and staff of NC State along with its alum. Joining the board allowed me to check the box next to one of my life goals. It’s the sub-bullet of being an active member that continues on for my term.
With National Engineers Week, I plan to highlight Black Engineers for the last week of Moore Of You’s Black History Moments. In addition, I am purposely identifying volunteer opportunities to continue to share my passion for STEM.
The quote from Ursula Burns, a Mechanical Engineer and first Black women CEO of a fortune 500 company (Xerox Corporation) sums up this week’s Monday Minute perfectly!
How do you plan to give back? Seriously consider what organizations, community outreach (big or small) you can do. Even if not in STEM, we should all center ourselves at various points of our lives around giving back whether to school age kids, young adults or career professionals.
With COVID19 precautions, there have been creative ways developed that allow your reach to go beyond your neighborhood. Virtual solutions allow you participate from your home.
I would love to hear how you plan to give back. Feel free to email or leave a comment on our website.
