March marks Women’s History Month. This year’s theme is “Women Who Advocate for Equity, Diversity, and Inclusion”.
I want to highlight two of the first African American women, Mary Eliza Mahoney and Ursula Burns. Two first in their fields. I can’t imagine being “the first” to face the adversity they endured. I am thankful for their courage and persistence. As I continue to find myself as the only black female leader in many professional settings, I am inspired to continue to do the same for future generations.
Mary Eliza Mahoney
She was the first African American licensed nurse and, in 1879, the first African American to graduate from an American nursing school.
Ursula Burns
In 2009, Ursula Burns became CEO of Xerox, making her the first African American female CEO of a Fortune 500 company.
As the month progresses, be intentional in learning and growing your knowledge and understanding of women’s history.
